Selling as-new (behind the ear) hearing aids (2) Selling as-new (behind the ear) hearing aids (3)

26 April 2022 at 7:20PM in Disability money matters

Just wondering if there is a market for nearly new (behind the ear) hearing aids out there, and if so, where the best place is to sell them (and if there are any restrictions)

My Mum bought new 2 Phonak behind the ear hearing aids for over £3k in October 2021, and she passed away unexpectedly in January 2022, so they have hardly been used.

I'm not expecting to recoup anywhere near the original cost, but if they can help someone else with their hearing, and we could get something back, then everyone wins.

Thanks

Not something I've met before, but I would speak to the supplier. If not a resale market, there may be a charity which would make use of them? Looks like there are a few options, I'd do a google as there may be local organisations (eg Lions) who will take them.

And so sorry for your loss.

    Sorry about your loss.

In the UK, it is uncommon for hearing aids to be sold in this manner as they require to be fitted to the wearer's needs. I am aware though that there is a community of people who buy and then tune their own hearing aids. They buy online from the selling platform which rhymes with "ray" (not sure if we are allowed to post commercial website names??). As they seem to be the higher end ones, you may have a taker!

    I'm sorry for your loss.

I too have seen HAs for sale on eBay, and it wouldn't surprise me if they were on other second-hand websites as well. I don't know whether there are any restrictions on these websites' T&Cs though about selling medical devices; you would have to check first. If you are considering it and the T&Cs seem to allow it, it might be a good idea to head on over to the eBay etc. board if you are not an experienced seller to find out what pitfalls to avoid

In the past the NHS didn't offer top-of-the-range models, they were always a couple of years behind technological advances, so going private gave access to higher spec models. I don't know for certain that's still the case, but can't see why it would have changed.

Prescription medical devices such as hearing aids, tinnitus maskers, cochlear implants, etc. are free for everyone on the NHS.

That's still the case. DH asked about Bluetooth capability with his last 'upgrade' but no joy: "next time", they said.

Meanwhile a colleague has just received her first NHS aid, with Bluetooth from the start. She's well pleased!

Wow, I'm sure bluetooth was coming in ~15yrs ago when I was a member of the original RNID forum (I have APD; no hearing loss so no HAs but that was the closest I found to people who understood, at the time). I would have expected it to be available on NHS aids for some time already, but evidently not!
